4/29/2021 0 Comments What Are the Differences Between a Desktop Computer and a Small Form Factor Computer? The battle over the future of personal computing power has long been decided between mini-chips and full-fledged desktops, but now the battle may be changing and the battle may be shifting to smaller and more powerful computers known as SFFs or small form factor computers. The difference between small form factor computers and mini-chips comes down largely to the size and configuration. Small form factor computers are generally smaller in size than their full-sized counterparts, and they are usually designed to lay flat, either like a traditional desktop PC tower or like a laptop computer, and often to simply sit on a desk. A typical SFF will have about the same number of cores as its desktop or laptop equivalent, and it will most likely have a typical number of gigabytes of hard drive space, though there will be an optional slot for an additional 2 gigabytes. In other words, a SFF is the size of a regular PC but is only as powerful as one! A microPC is also a small form factor computer, but it has all of the standard features found in typical PCs. It will most likely have a general purpose processor, with one or two processing cores, a standard hard drive, and possibly a microprocessor. However, a microPC is often equipped with more powerful hardware such as a PCI-E card or a PCI-SX board, which allows it to become a true all-in-one desktop replacement. Because it is so small, a micro PC is also highly portable, meaning it can be taken with you almost anywhere, which makes it very appealing to business professionals and college students who need a desktop replacement without having to carry or lug a large, heavy machine around with them all the time. Another type of a small form factor PC is the so-called industrial computer. These machines are built for heavy tasks that require power. The most common industrial computers are air conditioners, refrigerators, welding or industrial machinery, and even industrial computers used by professional wood workers are sometimes referred to as "shop servers." Industrial computers can be used to process large amounts of data or to help with large-scale data processing. Because these machines are designed for heavy duty work, they are often quite powerful and fast - some industrial computers are capable of running various parallel programs at the same time. A final type of small form factor computer is the so-called thin client. These machines are generally a scaled-down version of desktop computers and are aimed at miniaturizing a desktop PC into a device that can fit into a tight bundle. They are targeted at manufacturers of digital imaging equipment who want to make an affordable thin client for printing high quality images, rather than trying to fit a regular desktop PC into a very tiny case. Since the footprint is much smaller than a traditional PC, a thin client can still be quite powerful, although its usefulness for applications other than graphics or printing is very limited. They are usually manufactured in a similar fashion to regular PCs. However, because they are designed to be very small, they can only have a few basic installed applications. As a result, they don't have nearly the number of standard PC features such as word processing and spreadsheet programs, as do the standard desktops. The term "small form factor" is sometimes used interchangeably with "tower pc." A tower pc, sometimes called a super tower or "tower pc," is a larger version of the typical small form factor computer. It has the same basic specifications as a small form factor PC but has the same type of hard drive, graphics card, and other components as the larger more typical PC. Many people mistakenly believe that a tower PC is a miniature version of the large mainframe computers found in corporate America. These larger machines have many specialized components, such as an operating system, a programming language, and a database management system. A tower computer is often used by larger businesses as their primary computing device. Click here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_computer for more info relating to desktop computers.
